mit-scheme (12.1-12) unstable; urgency=medium * Fix for x32: cast signal-context registers through uintptr_t in uxtrap.c. They are greg_t, 64-bit on every x86-64 kernel ABI, so on x32, where a pointer is 32 bits, casting one straight to a pointer is fatal under -Werror and the microcode does not compile. -- Barak A. Pearlmutter Mon, 28 Sep 2026 12:36:04 +0100 mit-scheme (12.1-11) unstable; urgency=medium * Bootstrap i386 native from i386 svm. The i386 microcode did not compile because its back end deliberately addresses half the compiled-code hooks at negative offsets from Registers[], which -Warray-bounds detects, and the -Werror makes that fatal. So add a patch to demote that warning, as upstream already does for -Wstringop-truncation. * Bootstrap x32 svm -- Barak A. Pearlmutter Sat, 26 Sep 2026 11:42:17 +0100 mit-scheme (12.1-10) unstable; urgency=medium * Desktop icon: add opaque white background for visibiliy. Inkscape insisted on updating from 90 to 96 dpi. * Cut the AUXDIR_NAME patch down to letting the environment choose the auxiliary directory name, and set it in debian/rules for both flavours instead of patching Debian's choice into configure. * Bootstrap arm64 from the native Scheme rather than the SVM one, now that 12.1-9's aarch64 microcode fix is in the archive for the buildd to build against. -- Barak A. Pearlmutter Thu, 24 Sep 2026 15:36:24 +0100 mit-scheme (12.1-9) unstable; urgency=medium * Backport from upstream development branch: 32MB default heap on 32-bit; configure sizes the host compiler heap by the host word size, not the target's; sf integrates the target's fixnum bounds when cross-compiling. Together these make i386 build without help: drop the MITSCHEME_HEAP_SIZE workaround from debian/rules. * Patch src/Clean.sh so make distclean no longer deletes src/Makefile.tools, which is a source file since -7. * Patch the aarch64 microcode to strip the type code from the dynamic link restored after an interrupt. A tagged stack pointer is invisible to compiled code thanks to top-byte-ignore, but every stack check and the GC's stack scan see a huge address, so a native arm64 Scheme could not host a build: SIGSEGV at a point that depended on the memory layout, reproducibly under sbuild and never in a login session. Reported upstream. arm64 still bootstraps from mit-scheme-svm here, because the buildd's host is the previous upload; it can switch to the native Scheme once a fixed one is in the archive. * Build mit-scheme-svm on riscv64 and loong64. Patch confshared.h to recognise them -- neither has a native back end, so they need only a machine type and HEAP_IN_LOW_MEMORY, which makes their object representation match the other 64-bit little-endian ports -- and uxtrap.h to use __executable_start rather than the legacy _init, which the newer ports do not provide. * Substitute the SVM back end name into the maintainer scripts at build time instead of calling dpkg-architecture, which lives in dpkg-dev: that is not Essential and is absent from a minimal chroot, so mit-scheme-svm failed to configure there with status 127 (piuparts). * Make compilation reproducible. The compiler gave every file a random 32-byte debugging key; sf stamped every .bin with the wall clock; fasdump wrote the uninitialised padding after every string and bytevector; and a saved band carried the garbage collector's timing history, the save time, and everything the cold load had drawn from the entropy pool, so the compiler itself differed from build to build. Derive the key from the compilation's pathnames, honour SOURCE_DATE_EPOCH, zero the padding, and keep the clock and the entropy pool out of bands. Two causes are left, both in the bands only; see debian/NOTES.md. -- Barak A. Pearlmutter Fri, 18 Sep 2026 07:18:19 +0100 mit-scheme (12.1-8) unstable; urgency=medium * Fix DEP-5 debian/copyright exception syntax. * Upgrade upstream signing key to new packet format. * Compare the bootstrap Scheme's compiled-code type against the name it reports, not against the --enable-native-code name: an aarch64 Scheme reports "aarch64", the back end is "aarch64le", and the mismatch made native arm64 build cross-compile against itself. This was a problem on the arm64 buildd in -7. * Bootstrap arm64 from mit-scheme-svm, not mit-scheme: the native aarch64 Scheme segfaults as the host of a cross compilation, which building the SVM flavour from it is. The SVM Scheme as host, as in -6, works. * Set MITSCHEME_HEAP_SIZE=10000 on 32-bit hosts, the value configure already gives the host compiler there: the default heap is 12MB, which is too small to compiling imail-imap with Edwin loaded. (-6 got away with it on i386 only because a leftover check made it a cross build.) * Build the Scheme trees serially for extra safety. -- Barak A. Pearlmutter Mon, 14 Sep 2026 11:57:49 +0000 mit-scheme (12.1-7) unstable; urgency=medium * Drop leftover version-based --enable-cross-compiling test, superseded in -6 by the compiled-code-format check. * Build-depend on mit-scheme or mit-scheme-svm per architecture rather than as an alternative series, to get the buildds to bring in the right prerequisite. * Patch to build doc/, src/microcode/ and src/ with automake, leaving no hand-written Makefile.in. The manuals' .texi sources are renamed to the names they install under, and @setfilename removed, per modern texinfo. * Fix parallel build and drop --no-parallel. compile--c, which ran the same recursive make as compile- and so could build a plugin twice at once, is now confined to the (disabled) C back end that uses it. * makegen writes a fragment that microcode's Makefile.am includes, rather than a whole Makefile.in, and make refreshes it when a Scheme is available. automake derives the objects and header dependencies. * Drop patches sequentialize-docs, verbose-texi2dvi and texi2any-_html-fix, all made redundant by the above. * Reorder the patch series: upstream fixes, then the build system, then the Debian-specific ones, so upstream can take a prefix of it. Use AC_CONFIG_MACRO_DIR to find the local m4 file, in place of including it by hand * DEP-5 debian/copyright -- Barak A. Pearlmutter Sat, 12 Sep 2026 18:44:46 +0100 mit-scheme (12.1-6) unstable; urgency=medium * Put developer-relevant info in debian/NOTES.md, leaving README.Debian for user-relevant info only. * New binary package mit-scheme-svm, which uses a virtual machine rather than a native back end. Co-installable with the native build; both Provides: mit-scheme-interpreter. Control with build profiles pkg.mit-scheme.nonative / pkg.mit-scheme.nosvm. A mapping from Debian architecture to upstream back-end names, used in build options and filenames, is in debian/rules. Which flavours can build on the current arch comes from dh_listpackages, which isolates that information to debian/control. (Note: scmutils, the only package depending on mit-scheme, installs native .com files into the native flavour's auxiliary directory, so it cannot use the -svm flavor.) Make AUXDIR_NAME overridable, so the flavours can have separate aux directories. Update mit-scheme alternative for multiple installed flavors, with preference for native. Mark the self-referential build dependency :native, and use $(DEB_HOST_MULTIARCH) rather than a hardcoded triplet. * Decide --enable-cross-compiling by checking which compiled-code format the build-time-available mit-scheme produces, rather than comparing versions; otherwise building the SVM flavour with a native Scheme fails with fasl-file-bad-data when saving lib/runtime.com. * Build for arm64, and, via the new SVM flavour, i386 and ppc64el (closes: #365530). Include ppc64el confshared.h patch. (Note: armhf has a machine type but does not define HEAP_IN_LOW_MEMORY, so it cannot load bands or FASL files built anywhere else, and therefore cannot be bootstrapped.) * Record what makes an SVM band portable across architectures in debian/NOTES.md. * Bootstrap from a prebuilt SVM library when present in debian/prebuilt/ and no mit-scheme is installed. (This can avoid the need to manually seed new architectures. See debian/NOTES.md and git branch debian-bootstrap. Note: debian/prebuilt/ not currently in source package because it's an enormous binary blob.) * Override old-fsf-address-in-copyright-file (the Cambridge postal address in debian/copyright is MIT's, which lintian mistakes for the FSF's old address.) * Install man page under the version-qualified name of real binary. * Record upstream bug tracker in debian/upstream/metadata. * Split dh_auto_* overrides into -arch and -indep, so architecture-only builds no longer build the documentation. Move texlive, texlive-plain-generic and ghostscript to Build-Depends-Indep: only doc/ uses TeX, and that is now built only in the -indep sequence. (Closes: #1145694) * Put the Info manuals in the "The Algorithmic Language Scheme" section, alongside the other Scheme systems, instead of in "Programming Languages" on their own. (Closes: #115450) * Patch blowfish_selftest to copy only the 8 bytes the Blowfish IV actually has; it was copying 16, overrunning both source and destination on the stack (gcc -Warray-bounds catches it). * Drop the redundant update-alternatives --remove calls from the postrm; the prerm already withdraws them, and by postrm time the binary is gone, so those calls could leave /etc/alternatives dangling. * Build-depend on libncurses-dev rather than the obsolete libncurses5- dev. * Stop spelling out ${shlibs:Depends} and ${misc:Depends}; debhelper compat 14 fills the dependency fields in on its own, and naming them made dpkg-gencontrol warn. * Also install the man page under the version-qualified name of the real binary. * Refer to the FSF licence page in debian/copyright instead of the old postal address. * Record the upstream bug tracker in debian/upstream/metadata. * Add DEP-3 Forwarded: fields to the patches that lacked them. * Override two lintian tags that do not apply: the interpreter's file name is architecture-qualified, and the desktop entry's command comes from update-alternatives. * Patch sos.texinfo to drop a stray menu that claimed six sibling chapters as children of the Introduction. -- Barak A.
